Research and image requests
We make every effort to accommodate research requests. To inquire about research, call 905-791-4055 or send an email to the Art Gallery or Museum.
We may limit access due to legal or donor restrictions, the physical condition of the materials, or if the requested material is of a culturally sensitive nature.
Rights and reproductions
PAMA Art Gallery and Museum provide photographic material for objects in the collection for non-commercial and commercial publications, educational use, and research.
Permission for use is granted at PAMA’s discretion. Unauthorized use of images of objects in PAMA’s collection is prohibited and may not be reproduced or published in any form without PAMA’s written permission.
Requesting an Art Gallery or Museum image
Begin by completing the Art Gallery and Museum Image Request Form. Provide as much detail as possible, including the deadline for the material you need.
- Submit your request at least 6 weeks before the deadline to allow for review and acquisition of approvals, if applicable.
- The modification of an image, including cropping, requires permission from the copyright holder. Please allow for a longer approval period where modifications have been requested.
After reviewing your submitted request, PAMA will:
- Contact you if there be any questions or concerns about the intended image use or copyright holder.
- Provide the image file and proper credit line after receiving permission from the copyright holder.
As an applicant, you can only use the image and credit line provided by PAMA. In the absence of permission from the copyright holder, an alternative image will need to be selected.
Conditions for image reproduction and use
Once an image request is approved, an applicant must understand and agree to these conditions:
Use: Permission is granted for one-time use only, as outlined on the request form and is subject to any conditions set by PAMA or the copyright holder. Any additional use requires separate approval. Be as specific as possible to cover the full scope of your project when submitting your image request.
Reproduction: Images may not be altered without written permission. If an image alteration, such as cropping, is required, include this in your request.
Image credits: All reproductions must appear with the credit lines provided by PAMA. If changes need to be made to the credit lines, PAMA must provide further permission. Concerns about the credit lines, such as its length, should be included in the request.
Copyright: The applicant is responsible for making sure that copyright request is complete and accurate, and used only for the purpose mentioned in the request.
For images, where the copyright has not been assigned to PAMA or which are not in the public domain, the applicant will have to seek permission and proof of licensing from the copyright holder.
The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all conditions set by the copyright holder are followed, and fees (where applicable) are paid.
In some cases where copyright is not required, PAMA may still require the applicant to seek permission or guidance from the maker or maker community if an image is considered to be culturally sensitive.
Publication: The applicant is responsible for providing a hard or digital copy of the publication in which the requested image will be published.
Costs: The applicant must pay for any photography and applicable PAMA employee time needed to complete the request. These fees will be outlined before the request is approved.
